According to Crain’s Chicago Business from 2005, the top 5 employers in Chicago are:
1) US Government - 78,000 jobs
2) Chicago Public Schools - 43,783
3) City of Chicago - 39,675
4) Jewel/Osco - 34,037 (Jewel/Osco is a grocery store/pharmacy chain.)
5) Cook County Government - 25,482
